Today marks the beginning of a search, beginning only in an official sense as I have been in one way or another searching my whole life for the greatest Taco in one way or another. At the risk of over double-entendre-ing I am embarking on a journey; a journey that will not only tax me gastro-intestinally but also spiritually (also apparently this will be a spell-checkingly taxing endeavor as well). The search for Tacoma's Taco will raise certain metaphysical questions "what defines taco-ness", as well as epistemological questions: "How do I know that taco won't reek havoc on my innards?" I will clearly be under immense pressure every time I approach a taco truck, taqueria, or any other taco dispensing outlet. One does not simply walk into the greatest Taco in Tacoma.
So, to embark on this enterprise I must first tackle that metaphysical quandry: "What is the essential Taco?" Well, to begin with a taco has a shell, a tortilla or (as Joe pointed out) some kind of crispy shell. But Taco-ness is not only shell-deep! The innerworkings of a Taco persist to define it as much as any other being. A Taco usually has meat of some sort, some kind of vegetables, sometimes cheese, sometimes sauce, and most the time the added ingredient of delicious. Alas! Does not a burrito often have these same fillings? I know a Taco when I see one and I know a Burrito when I see one. A burrito usually is larger and often has rice, is that the difference? Taco or burrito, is size finally coming to haunt me again? I think that this takes us to the realization that the essential Taco is indefinable, like essential man. Apparently Plato never ate mexican food. Clearly the essence of Taco must be found through dialectic, through trial and error, the thesis antithesis synthesis of Taco sampling. I am truly post-modern man undertaking to find some Taco truth in this world.
Am I to take on this daunting challenge alone? Nay, I call upon the Tacoma Taco faithful to suggest possible definitions of Tacos and where one may find the essential or greatest Taco in Tacoma. I have sampled some great Tacos in my time, but am still at a loss as to what means to behold the prime Taco. Also I encourage you the reader to reflect on what exactly comprises a Taco and sets it apart from other foods you have eaten. For instance, is there a Thai Taco out there? If so, I should try it, as that would help narrow down what exactly is Taco essence and wether or not I want Taco essence all over my face and inside my stomach.
Well, I guess that's it for the outset. Answers will follow, hopefully or I am truly a man lost at sea, a sea of Tacos.
